The Four Lock Gate
The original drawing that the four lock gate is based on comes from L'atmosphere Meteorologie Populaire, published by Camille Flammarion in 1888. Flammarion is a lovely exotic name from old French, meaning 'Torchbearer'. This justly famous drawing has been frequently re-used for book covers describing new discoveries or paradigm shifts, and those responsible for them. The Traveler is discovering what is behind the organization of the Cosmos!
Roger first reverses the illustration right-to-left (his frequent practice).
I have reversed the original drawing here, so we can compare and contrast more easily. And I have cropped and expanded our normal view of the Hypercard window, to show more detail.
Notice that Flammarion's original did not fill in a legend on the scrollwork at the bottom center. There are no actual symbols in the little enclosures on the edges, although the embroidery on top resembles little fledged animals. The landscape under the Sun includes little houses - Roger's version obscures that detail.
Lots of changes to the graphic. Each corner has a definite symbol, and there are 4 keys added to the drawing - three in the frame, and one in the landscape under the Sun. 'Ve Re Tas' - Latin for 'truth', but separated into 3 groups here after Harvard's usage as a motto, to spread it across 3 books.
There are two ways to investigate objects in Hypercard. The first way is to use the 'Option+Command' buttons. The combined buttons colored on our two pictures here come up as the objects being lightly outlined with dashed lines. The second way is to click on the object, which makes the object change to a negative of itself. If you maintain the click and move the mouse out of the Hypercard window, you can release without selecting the object. The red objects are the ones that do inverse video.
You can see from the start, Roger is upping the ante on this final part of the game. For example, the previous clue says we need 4 keys! - but the 4 actual keys embedded in the graphic seem to do no good at all ...
